Dana Incorporated, a globally recognized leader in the design and manufacture of highly efficient propulsion and energy – management solutions, has had a significant presence in China since 1991. The company’s journey in China has been marked by continuous growth, innovation, and a strong commitment to meeting the diverse needs of the local market.
Initial Entry and Early Establishments
In 1991, Dana set foot in the Chinese mainland, establishing its regional headquarters in Shanghai. This strategic move was the cornerstone of its long – term plans in the Chinese market. Shanghai, being a major economic and commercial hub in China, provided Dana with excellent access to resources, a skilled workforce, and proximity to key customers.
Shortly after its arrival, Dana began to build a network of manufacturing facilities. The first few production plants were dedicated to the professional manufacturing of Spicer drive system products, Long thermal management products, and VictorReinz sealing products for automotive and commercial vehicles. For example, Shenyang Jinya, a joint venture between ROC Spicer (a partner of Dana and Yulon Group) and Jinbei Automotive, was established to provide drive shaft components designed globally and locally for local customers. This early establishment not only introduced Dana’s advanced technologies to the Chinese market but also laid the foundation for its future expansion.

Expansion and Diversification of Business Operations
Over the years, Dana has continuously expanded its business scope in China. It has established multiple joint ventures and wholly – owned subsidiaries across different regions. Fujian Taiya, a joint venture between Dana and China Taiya, has been supplying drive axles for a wide range of light buses and commercial vehicles to numerous Chinese customers. This has significantly contributed to the development of the domestic light – duty vehicle industry.
Dana (Wuxi) Technologies Co., Ltd., a wholly – owned company, specializes in the manufacture of axles and thermal management products. Its products not only meet the needs of the domestic market but also contribute to Dana’s global supply chain. In addition, the establishment of Dongfeng Dana Axle Company, Ltd., a 50 – 50 partnership with Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd., has provided globally recognized advanced axles for commercial vehicles in the Chinese market, enhancing the competitiveness of Chinese commercial vehicle manufacturers.
Technological Innovation and R & D Investment
Dana has always attached great importance to technological innovation in China. In 2011, the Dana China Technology Center was opened in Wuxi. Covering an area of 11,000 square meters, this center plays a crucial role in the research, design, development, and testing of drivetrain, sealing, and thermal management products. It provides global design and testing support for non – highway axles and transmissions, light – duty axles and drive shafts, seals, and thermal management products.
The center is equipped with advanced testing laboratories and production equipment, enabling Dana to continuously innovate and introduce new technologies to the global market. It also supports Dana’s global product development activities and helps the company design and provide products that meet the specific needs of Chinese and Asia – Pacific customers. For instance, in response to the growing demand for new energy vehicles in China, the center has been actively involved in the research and development of electric drive systems and battery cooling technologies.
Meeting the Needs of the Chinese Market
Dana understands the unique characteristics and needs of the Chinese market. In the automotive market, which is highly competitive and rapidly evolving in China, Dana has tailored its products and services. For light vehicles, it provides drive systems that offer high efficiency, smooth operation, and reduced noise and vibration, enhancing the driving experience. In the commercial vehicle segment, considering the long – distance transportation and heavy – load requirements in China, Dana’s axles and transmission systems are designed to be highly durable and fuel – efficient, helping commercial vehicle operators reduce operating costs.
In the off – highway equipment market, which is booming in China due to infrastructure construction and agricultural development, Dana offers customized mobile drivetrain and motion solutions. These solutions support construction, agriculture, material handling, mining, and forestry equipment, whether powered by conventional or electrified power sources.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, Dana is well – positioned for further growth in China. With the continuous development of the Chinese automotive and industrial markets, especially the accelerating trend towards new energy vehicles and intelligent manufacturing, Dana’s advanced technologies in electrodynamic systems, thermal management, and digital solutions will have more application opportunities.
The company plans to continue investing in research and development, expanding its manufacturing capacity, and strengthening its cooperation with local partners. By doing so, Dana aims to maintain its leading position in the Chinese market, contribute to the sustainable development of the local automotive and industrial sectors, and achieve mutual growth with its customers and partners in China.
